Restoring Biodiversity

The Bellarine Peninsula contains woodlands, grasslands, internationally recognised wetlands, and coastal salt marshes.  These special places contain distinctive native plants and animals, many threatened and in need of our protection.

We work with residents, farmers, public land managers and other groups to restore biodiversity in our natural environment through activities such as planting, weeding, rabbit control and field days. We sell nest boxes through our nursery to house native wildlife.

The importance of biodiversity is a central theme for many of our talks, workshops and field days.

Pests

Pest plants and animals threaten biodiversity and damage our crops and pastures.

Rabbits are one of Australia’s most serious pests. Our Rabbit Action Group provides advice, tools and other resources to support property owners to eradicate rabbits from their land. We encourage community collaboration.

Invasive weeds outcompete native plants, prevent regeneration of bushland, and take over farmland. We help you identify weeds and understand the best ways to control them.

When we manage pests, it’s important to consider the effects on local plants and wildlife. Many birds of prey eat our pest rodents, so we advise you to choose rodenticides which do not kill our natural predators.

Sustainable Farming

Landcare works with local farmers to improve productivity and ensure a healthy environment. We encourage and support sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices to restore and improve the productivity of natural systems.

We draw on the expertise of organisations such as Agriculture Victoria, the Victorian Farmers Federation, and the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority. Bellarine Landcare also partners with local groups such as Bellarine Farm Gate and Farm My School.
