Bellarine Landcare Monthly Update August 2024
Congratulations Beth & BLG Events
We are so proud! Beth Ross took out the Women in Landcare Award as part of the Victorian Landcare Awards last week at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne. Beth contributes so much to so many conservation groups across the Bellarine Peninsula. We are grateful for her work with the Landcare Nursery where she plays an essential role of supporting Nursery, and she's the Nursery Rep on the BLG Committee. She's also Vice President of Bellarine Catchment Network, Secretary of Friends of Ocean Grove Nature Reserve, and she contributes to other groups including Friends of Edwards Point. Beth's passion and dedication to the natural world inspires all of us who have the pleasure of weeding, propagating or spending time in nature with her. We value Beth's work educating the community through workshops and technology such as the local plant website, Nature Search and through iNaturalist. Beth's sense of humour, care for people and wise, earthy approach is gold. Congratulations, Beth, and thank-you, Blacky for your support of Beth which enables her to do what she does so well.

The Rabbit Sweep
Wed August 14, Marcus Hill Hall, 6.30pm An important discussion session hosted by Bellarine Landcare Group
For more than a hundred years, Victorians have been battling invasive animals. There is a high cost associated with feral animals including cats, pigs, foxes, rabbits and now deer. We are all affected - our ambiance is altered, our health-promoting environment is not as it should be, agriculture has extra costs, and we are losing indigenous flora and fauna.
Just why do we need to ‘deal with’ invasive species, and why is it so hard to deal with them? What do we need to do and why? Are there things we are not seeing in the landscape that can make a difference? Who needs to be involved in managing the environment?
You are invited to join us as we work our way through a very good presentation by Euan Ritchie, Professor of Wildlife Conservation and Ecology, discussing what he thinks are important things to understand from the scientific perspective. He joins others in warning us that success in one aspect can mean unwanted consequences in another.
We will have panelists leading the discussion and we will encourage you to offer your perspective and critique our plans and activities with respect to invasive species.
6.30 pm, August 14, 2024, Marcus Hill Hall, corner Bellarine Highway & Banks Road. Make it a date! There will be tea and coffee and some snacks.
Please bring your neighbours, friends, anyone who is related to the special landscape of the Bellarine Peninsula.
