1 Million Turtles: how to help protect Long-necked Turtles on the Bellarine

James Van Dkyke is a senior lecturer at La Trobe University, Wodonga.

1 Million Turtles is a nation-wide effort to provide support for communities to lead conservation of freshwater turtles. The program involves the mobile phone app, TurtleSAT, which anyone can use to record turtle sightings. We have also developed a series of training programs for on-ground conservation and citizen science actions that anyone can do. These range from how to collect data on the impacts of foxes in your area, to how to help turtles you see crossing roads, and ways to work with local councils to improve infrastructure for turtle ecology. We will also soon be promoting an additional program to actively help protect turtle nests. Last, we will be doing on-ground conservation work throughout Victoria, and there will be opportunities to volunteer with more direct turtle ecology research.

Bellarine Landcare is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
