This will be a joint meeting with Friends of Grasslands (FoG) from Canberra.
Hints on identifying grasses with Geoff Robertson (from Friends Of Grasslands) https://www.fog.org.au/
Being able to identify individual plant species is a challenge, but nevertheless important if we are to understand how to manage and restore our natural temperate grasslands. Why? because each species has its own unique habitat, behaviour, chemicals (nutrients and toxins) and way of providing shelter to other species. Grasses, while being flowering plants, are harder to identify as their flowers are less spectacular than most flower families and their numbers are huge. In NSW there are something like 150 genera of grasses and in many genera there are numerous species. Love grasses (Eragrostis) in NSW have something like 30 native and 10 introduced species. The session will focus on some hints that might make the task of identifying grasses a little easier.
